Sibling Group
The experience of being a neurotypical sibling to an autistic child can be both enjoyable and challenging. Many siblings share positive experiences and develop patience, understanding, and acceptance, which provides them with wonderful qualities for life. However, it is also recognised that the situation can be quite stressful for neurotypical siblings, often presenting additional demands and increased levels of anxiety. Siblings may experience feelings of anger, sadness, jealousy, and frustration. Despite recognising that their autistic sibling requires extra help and attention, siblings may feel that the family's attention is always on their autistic sibling, especially if the family has to plan their daily life to accommodate the needs of an autistic child, which can significantly impact the sibling’s life too. Therefore, it is important for these siblings to access time away from the family setting.
Our Siblings Group aims to provide monthly social events for brothers and sisters of autistic children. The events offer siblings a chance to relax, have fun, and take part in activities that may not otherwise be available to them. It also helps them connect with others who understand what it's like to have an autistic sibling and provides an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the autism spectrum.
The Group is open to children aged 4-16 years and includes activities such as tennis at St. Clement’s Golf Club, bowling at Jersey Bowl, pizza making at Pizza Express, and much more. If you're interested in learning more and would like to stay updated on upcoming events, please get in touch.
