Befriending

What is befriending?

Befriending involves trained volunteers providing support and companionship to individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Conditions. Befrienders are matched with individuals and they decide how often to meet and what activities to do. The support is flexible and arranged based on the volunteer’s availability and the individual or family’s preferences. Befrienders and volunteers usually meet regularly to take part in enjoyable social activities such as walking swimming, coffee outings, cinema visits, shopping, beauty salon visits and more.

What does befriending achieve?

Befriending has the power to create new opportunities, bring a new sense of purpose, boost self-esteem, and in addition, offers respite for parents and caregivers. For autistic individuals, it provides a reliable social connection, bringing companionship, fun and a valuable contribution to their lives.

Is befriending safe?

Befriending is a very safe option for all involved parties. We make sure that our volunteers are well-trained, have references, and an enhanced DBS check. Our befriender coordinator provides regular support for all friendships and is available to help both parties. Friendships operate within agreed boundaries, and both volunteers and befriendees sign an agreement to clarify expectations and ensure mutual understanding and confidentiality.

How can I become a befriender?

We look for individuals who are reliable, interested in the lives of others and able to commit to volunteering for 2 hours per month for at least 12 months. Befrienders are required to undergo an application process including:

  • filling out an application form with personal details and interests

  • undergoing a DBS check

  • understanding and signing an agreement to confidentiality for all concerned

Who is eligible and how can we access befriending?

Our befriending service is provided free of charge to autistic individuals in Jersey, including both children and adults. To find out more, please get in touch with our befriending coordinator (details below). Cheryl will then arrange a meeting with the individual and their family to discuss their needs and expectations to find the most suitable match.
